Behind the Scenes: Why "Healing Quietly Still Counts" Needed to Be Said

Behind the Scenes: Why "Healing Quietly Still Counts" Needed to Be Said

You know, when I was sitting down to map out episodes for Breaking Ranks, I kept coming back to this nagging feeling. We talk a lot about survival, about speaking out, about breaking your silence. And that’s important…that’s literally what this podcast is about. But somewhere in all that, I started wondering: what about the people who are healing quietly? What about the ones who aren’t ready to shout about it from the rooftops, and maybe never will be?

That’s where this episode came from.

I wanted to challenge this idea that healing has to look a certain way. There’s this unspoken pressure in survivor communities…I see it all the time…where people feel like they’re not doing it “right” if they’re not public about their journey, if they’re not turning their trauma into activism or a platform. And don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for everyone who does that. But I was tired of the silence around quiet healing.

When we were writing, something really struck me. We were talking about all these small, almost invisible acts of recovery…showing up for therapy even when nobody’s watching, setting a boundary with a family member and not announcing it to the world, choosing yourself in a moment and just… living with that choice privately. I was thinking about this moment where I finally got a full night’s sleep without nightmares, and I just didn’t tell anyone. I just let myself have it. And I remember thinking, that’s everything.

What surprised me most during my writing session was how much shame people carry about not being “loud enough” in their healing. Like, if you’re not writing about it or speaking about it or turning it into some kind of public narrative, you’re somehow not doing the work. That broke my heart a little bit, honestly. Because the work is the work, whether anyone else sees it or not.

There was this one moment…where i stopped and thought to myself (or outloud because who doesn’t talk to themselves), “I think I needed permission to heal the way that feels right for me.” And I really had to pause for a second because that hit different. That’s the whole thing right there.

I think what I learned making this episode is that Breaking Ranks isn’t just about breaking silence. It’s about breaking the rules around how you’re supposed to heal from that silence. Some of us need to scream. Some of us need to write. Some of us need to speak on stages. And some of us need to do the work in the quiet, in our own space, on our own timeline.

And that’s not less than. That’s just different.

If you’ve been feeling like your healing isn’t “enough” because it’s not visible, this episode is for you. You’re doing it right.
